Protea cynaroides, also called the king protea, giant protea, honeypot or king sugar bush is a distinctive member of Protea, having the largest flower head in the genus. It is widely distributed in the southwestern and southern parts of South Africa in the fynbos region.\nThis unusual flower has a long vase life in flower arrangements, and makes for an excellent dried flower.\nProtea cynaroides is adapted to survive wildfires by its thick underground stem, which contains many dormant buds; these will produce the new growth after the fire.

Western Cape Province is the fourth largest of nine provinces in South Africa. The two largest cities are Capetown and George.
Protea cynaroides, also called the king protea,  giant protea, honeypot or king sugar bush.  It is widely distributed in the southwestern and southern parts of South Africa in the fynbos region. \n\nThe king protea has several colour forms and horticulturists have recognized 81 garden varieties. This unusual flower has a long vase life in flower arrangements, and makes for an excellent dried flower.\n\nProtea cynaroides is adapted to survive wildfires by its thick underground stem, which contains many dormant buds these will produce the new growth after the fire.

The Protea flower is not a flower, but a flower head or inflorescence, made up of many individual flowers grouped together on a rounded base or receptacle. What looks like the 'petals' of the protea 'flower' are modified leaves known as floral or involucral bracts.
