Molokai’s Kalaupapa Peninsula is a remote flatland at the base of 1,000- to 2,000-foot cliffs (300-600 m). This is where those suffering from leprosy were banished for the remainder of their lives. Drug therapies were eventually developed so that the patients were no longer contagious and the forced quarantine ended in 1969.\n\nFrom the settlement’s start in 1866 until well after Father Damien arrived, conditions at Kalaupapa were extremely difficult. Damien’s work there soon became known throughout the world, bringing much-needed attention to the plight of the peninsula’s suffering people and conditions gradually improved. His service, devotion, and self-sacrifice led to his being designated Saint Damien of Molokai—the patron saint of those with Hansen’s disease.

Grande Comore / Ngazidja, Comoros islands: view from above the north coast with the Ouemani / Wemani crater in the foreground and at the top, Mount Karthala (2361m), a very active shield volcano, the highest point in Comoro Islands, and one of the largest craters in the world. Multiple cinder cones in between. Grande Comore is geologically the youngest island in the archipelago. Agriculture is hardly possible there because of lave fields and the lack of fresh water sources. Coelacanths live on the island's sea slopes, for which a marine reserve has been created with the Zone du Coelacanthe .
Koko Crater is an extinct tuff cone located on the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu near Hawaiʻi Kai. It is northeast of Hanauma Bay and south of the Koʻolau Range.
