These rocks were formed in the ancient times, back when the evils of the world had to be held at bay. Giant rock formations were put up in the Joshua Tree so that those forces couldn't make it to our world. Now they are crumbling and will soon fall, as may our world.

Joshua Tree National Park (California). Shot at mid-day from within Hidden Valley, a box canyon of less than one square mile that once was a hideout for cattle rustlers and other n'er-do-wells. The canyon provides some protection from the wind and slightly more retained moisture than the surrounding desert. Joshua Tree is still listed in places as a National Monument, but it is now a National Park. Also from the park:

Two of the most striking features of the Mojave Desert in the American Southwest are the pillowy shaped rock formations and the strange looking plants that surround them. Heat and pressure over thousands of years transformed sedimentary rock into an entirely new kind of rock called gneiss. The strange looking Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia) is a member of the Agave family that typically grows in the Mojave Desert. Legend has it that Mormon pioneers named the tree after the biblical figure Joshua, seeing the limbs of the tree as outstretched arms.
