Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy, May 23 -- A panoramic and sunny view of the iconic Piazza Grande (Great Square), in the historic and medieval heart of Arezzo in Tuscany, central Italy. Built in 1200 with a trapezoidal plan and a notable inclination, the square is surrounded by important historical buildings. Piazza Grande is also the setting for the traditional Giostra del Saracino, a medieval equestrian tournament held twice a year. In the background on the right, the facade of the Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici (Palace of the Fraternity of the Lay), an elegant building with a facade that is partly Gothic and partly Renaissance, with the astronomical clock located at the clock tower. On the left, the bell tower and the exterior of the apse of the church of the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, built in Romanesque style between the 12th and 14th centuries. Arezzo, founded in Etruscan times and later becoming an important center of Ancient Rome, is famous for the innumerable artistic and architectural treasures of its medieval and Renaissance heart. Officially named as the Duomo dei Santi Pietro e Donato (Cathedral of Saints Peter and Donato), the Duomo of Arezzo was built starting from 1278 in the Italian Gothic style. The interior has three naves covered with cross vaults and divided by round Gothic arches. Inside are kept masterpieces by Donatello, Piero della Francesca and Guillaume de Marcillat, the latter author of numerous stained glass windows and rose windows and the frescoes on the vault. Arezzo, founded by the Etruscans and later an important center of the ancient Roman Empire and an important city during the Renaissance, is famous for the countless artistic and architectural treasures of its historic and medieval heart.
