The genus is quite large, comprising several hundred species that are native to warm temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world, originating in Africa. The flowers are large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped, with five or more petals, colour from white to pink, red, orange, peach, yellow or purple, and from 4–18 cm broad.

Native to East Asia, Hibiscus syriacus is a species of flowering plant, which is a vigorous, upright, case-shaped, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub. Its showy, 5-petaled flowers appear from early summer to autumn, comparatively long period. The flower comes in such colors as pink, purple and white, each flower having a prominent and showy center staminal column. Its common names include Rose of Sharon, shrub althea, rose mallow and St. Joseph’s rod.
