Hairy Red Hermit Crab or Dark Knee Hermit Crab Dardanus lagopodes occurs in the Indo-Pacific from east coast of Africa to Japan and Tuamotu Archipelago in a depth range from 0-120 m, max. length 10cm. \n\nThe diet of the Hairy Red Hermit Crab is primarily herbivorous, as it feeds on various types of algae and detritus found in its habitat. It has been observed using its claws to scrape off algae from rocks and other surfaces. \n\nAs a hermit crab, Dardanus lagopodes constantly looks for suitable shells to upgrade into, as it grows throughout its life, a vital behavior, as the shell acts as its primary defense against predators. \n\nTriton Bay, Indonesia \n3°57'4.944 S 134°8'1.032 E at 16m depth

A hermit crab in the French Mediterranean Sea
The Caribbean Hermit Crab is a species of land hermit crab native to the west Atlantic, Bahamas, Belize, southern Florida, Venezuela, the Virgin Islands, and the West Indies. Adults burrow and hide under the roots of large trees, and can be found a considerable distance inland. Hermit crabs are common in Belize, particularly on the sandy beaches where they can be found scuttling around at all hours of the day and night.
