It was previously mistaken for Hemicordia Australiae The difference was noticed when a normally aggressive Hemicordia Australiae males were observed ignoring what was thought to be other Hemicordia Australiae males . It was later discovered the ignored male dragonflies were Hemicordulia Armstrongi who have no interest in female Hemicordia Australiae dragonflies

Green Dragon Fly

The black-winged dragonfly belongs to the family of dragonflies, a very primitive insect. It is distributed in Henan, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Fujian, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guangxi, etc. The face is dark and hairy. Except for the slightly lighter base color of the front lip, the rest of the body and the top of the head are all blue-green or blue-brown with a metallic luster. The back of the head is brown, with hair on the rear edge. The prothorax is black. The front of the sternum is blue-green with thick hair, and the side of the sternum is dark green with sparse hair. Most of the wings are black with blue-green flashes, and a small part is transparent. The hind wings are black; the area from the base of the wing to the end of the wing knot and the end of the elbow vein of the forewing is black, with a small black spot at the end of the wing, and the rest is transparent and colorless. The legs are black. The abdomen and anal appendages are all black [1].

Field characters: 66-84mm, abdomen: 50-61mm, Hw: 45-52mm.Blue Emperor is presently a common species, which is only absent from parts of the northern provinces of Groningen and Friesland. It is found at most larger bodies of standing water. Compared to the pre-1990 period, the species has increased strongly. So is with other dragonflies, Blue Emperor has benefit of the gradual warming in the last decades.The largest Aeshnid in most of our area and common Species in the Netherlands..
