Dresden, Germany - September, 23rd - 2023. The most famous monument in Dresden is the Golden Rider. It was built 1732-1734 and shows Elector Friedrich August I, better known as August the Strong, in Roman armor. The monument is gilded and shows the famous ruler riding on a rising Lipizzaner stallion in an easterly direction.

$Standing atop a 40-foot marble pylon is this gilded sculpture group representing the victorious Columbia Triumphant (the United States.) She is in a seashell-shaped chariot pulled by three hippocampi, mythical figures with the front half of a horse and the rear half of a fish. Columiba’s left hand holds aloft a sprig of laurel leaves, symbolizing victory. Her right hand holds a fasces, a roman symbol representing government power. A shield is strapped to her back. The height of the group is fourteen feet. \n\nAs with all the sculptural work on this monument, the artist was Attilio Piccerilli (1866-1945.) For his figure of Columbia, as well as two other figures for this monument, his model was Audrey Munson. \n\nMunson posed for more than a dozen important statues, sculptures, and friezes, most of which still stand to this day across Manhattan and Brooklyn. She is now often called “America’s First Supermodel.”$
