Paris, France - July 23, 2015: A gargoyle juts out of the side of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, the iconic church that dominates the Parisian skyline from the highest hill in Paris.

A gargoyle on the wall of Washington National Cathedral (the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington) in Washington D.C. This gothic cathedral is the third-largest church building in the United States. Construction began on September 29, 1907 and did not technically end until 1990. The cathedral stands at Massachusetts and Wisconsin Avenues in the northwest quadrant of Washington.

Lincoln Cathedral (or the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln), in Lincoln, England is the seat of the Anglican bishop. Building commenced in 1088 and continued in several phases throughout the medieval period. It was the tallest building in the world for 238 years (1311–1549), and the first building to hold that title after the Great Pyramid of Giza. The central spire collapsed in 1549 and was not rebuilt. The cathedral is the third largest in Britain (in floor area) after St Paul's and York Minster, being 484 by 271 feet.

A photograph of a grotesque situated on Lichfield Cathedral in Lichfield, England. The photographs of these grotesques form part of a series. These sculptures are grotesques rather than gargoyles as gargoyles are intended to be part of the water drainage system from the rooftops of churches and cathedrals. It is not known what purpose the 'grotesques' serve but they certainly get ones imagination going. Some have amusing expressions whilst others are quite hideous.
