White froggies, or white frogfishes, are a fascinating and elusive species commonly found around Mabul Island, Malaysia. These small, anglerfish-like creatures are known for their unique, comical appearance, with large, bulbous heads and broad, flattened bodies. Their white color helps them blend seamlessly into their surroundings, often hiding among corals, sponges, or algae. This camouflage, combined with their ability to shift hues, makes them challenging to spot even for experienced divers.\n\nOne of the most intriguing features of white frogfishes is their esca, a specialized lure on their heads. This fleshy appendage mimics the movement of small prey, attracting fish or shrimp within striking distance. Once prey is near, the frogfish ambushes it with incredible speed and precision, despite their slow-moving nature.\n\nMabul Island’s clear waters and vibrant coral reefs provide the perfect habitat for these stealthy predators. They are masters of disguise, often blending into the reef and requiring keen eyes to find. Encountering a white froggie during a dive is a thrilling experience, offering a glimpse into the incredible biodiversity of the island’s marine life. For divers, spotting a white frogfish is a highlight of exploring the underwater world of Mabul, showcasing the unique and often hidden wonders of the ocean.

Two-stick Stingfish Inimicus filamentosus occurs in the Western Indian Ocean from the Red Sea and East Africa to Indonesia, the Philippines and the Maldives on sand and rubble bottoms of coral reefs in a depth range from shallow to 55m, max. standard legth 25cm, common 20cm. \n\nThe skin is without scales except along the lateral line, and is covered with venomous spines and wartlike glands which give it a knobby appearance. \nMales and females look the same. \n\nInimicus filamentosus is an ambush predator, feeding on fishes. It is a nocturnal species that typically lies partially buried on the sea floor or on a coral head during the day, covering itself with sand and other debris to further camouflage itself. \n\nWhen disturbed by a scuba diver or a potential predator, it fans out its brilliantly colored pectoral and caudal fins as a warning. Once dug in, it is very reluctant to leave its hiding place. When it does move, it displays an unusual mechanism of locomotion crawling slowly along the seabed, employing the four lower rays (two on each side) of its pectoral fins as legs. \n\nLembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°28'8.916 N 125°14'39.102 E at 19m depth
