It is not known what purpose the 'grotesques' serve but they certainly get ones imagination going. Some have amusing expressions whilst others are quite hideous.

The Small Onofrio Fountain (Mala Onofrijeva fontana), built between 1438 and 1440 by architect Onofrio della Cava, is located at the eastern end of Dubrovnik’s Stradun. It was part of a revolutionary 15th-century water supply system that brought fresh water from a spring 12 kilometers away. The octagonal fountain features reliefs of playful, stylized human figures, carved in Gothic style, and served both a practical and decorative role.
