This hummingbird species is on average 12.6 centimeters long. The striking contrasting colors of the rectrices are displayed when the bird expands its tail into a white fan split in two by the black central fins or when it quickly opens and closes its caudal fins. The white of the tail continues to the flanks and forms a stripe over the crest.\n\nJuveniles are almost entirely black with brown spots. They have a brown maxillary stripe, cinnamon or black tail, and only the lateral rectrices are white.
