Melbourne, Australia - January 31, 2016: An UP Metro train to Flinders Street proceeds cautiously across the heritage-listed old wooden viaduct after leaving Eltham Station on Melbourne’s Hurstbridge line. Built in 1902 for steam-era trains, the bridge over Diamond Creek is the last-remaining railway bridge built predominantly from timber still in use on the Melbourne metropolitan railway network. While an attractive part of the river-valley environment, the old bridge is a bottleneck for modern railway operations.
