Selective focus is on the sharp orange eye. Egyptian geese are regularly seen around the ponds and lakes of London, and have been since the 1980s. They suffer the same dual personality problems as other water birds, looking out anxiously for their young whilst checking out people in case they are carrying bread. all of which calls for a sharp eye.

This female Egyptian goose is dibbling in the mud for food. (I don't know if blowing bubbles through the mud is part of the feeding strategy, but there are bubbles by the nostril.) Books describe the male and female as identical apart from their size (which is to say, there is no great sexual dimorphism). However, in recent years around London, I have seen a few female Egyptian geese, like this one, that lack the distinctive brown eye patch. (For male see lightbox, below). This is the only species of goose to nest in trees (or so I am told).
