This particular type of foxglove is known as Digitalis purpurea 'excelsior' and is biennial, meaning that it grows during its first year, before flowering and seeding itself the following year.

Medium to tall, hairy, greyish biennial or short-lived perennial, to 1.5m tall; stems generally unbranched, hairless at the base. Basal leaves oval to lanceolate, tapered to the winged stalk, blunt toothed; upper leaves similar but smaller. Flowers purple, patterned with darker spots or rings inside, regularly white, with a silky sheen, 40-50mm, hairy on the lower lip inside and along the lip margin.\nHabitat: Open woodlands, scrub, mainly on acid soils, to 1000m.\nFlowering Season: June-September.\nDistribution: North to Sweden, naturalized in Denmark and Holland. Garden cultivars naturalized locally.\n\nThe very poisonous Plant is still used for the treatment of heart complaints (Digitalin).
