The charred remains of a rat lie near the road in Littleton, Colorado’s Waterton Canyon. According to fire fighters at the scene, they got the call at 3:30am of a fire near the Strontia Springs Dam along the South Platte River in Waterton Canyon on September 21, 2022. West Metro and the U.S. Forest Service fire fighters quickly put out the flames which were climbing the steep canyon walls. According to fire fighters, the source of the fire was located at an electrical box, likely ignited by the rat chewing the wires and electrocuted. The body of the rat was relocated near the road by a firefighter, where it remained and later decomposed.

One of the largest muroids, it is a brown or grey rodent with a body length of up to 28 cm long, and a tail slightly shorter than that. It weighs between 140 and 500 g.Thought to have originated in northern China and neighbouring areas, this rodent has now spread to all continents except Antarctica, and is the dominant rat in Europe and much of North America.
