Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador: Historically marking the northern entrance to Quito's Historic Center, the Iglesia de San Blas is the seat of one of the city's first parishes, established around 1568 to evangelize the indigenous population living just outside the Spanish grid. The church overlooks the Plaza de San Blas, a space that traditionally functioned as a strategic commercial boundary and market. The church retains a sober colonial character with a single nave, a stone portico, and a modest belfry. The surrounding plaza, renovated in the early 2000s to reclaim public space from traffic, features a central fountain and serves as a transitional landmark between the colonial core and the modern city expansion toward La Alameda.
