Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, renowned for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture. It is located in the eastern Mediterranean, serving as a crossroads between Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The shipwreck off Balos Lagoon in Crete is the Dimitrios P, a 35-meter cargo ship that ran aground on Imeri Gramvousa Island on January 8, 1968. It had departed from Chalkida, Greece, on December 30, 1967, carrying 440 tons of cement bound for North Africa. Adverse weather forced it to anchor near Kythira and later near Gramvousa. During the storm, the ship’s right anchor chain broke, causing it to lean and flood the engine room. The captain ordered the crew to abandon ship, and all were rescued by the Greek Navy two days later. The vessel has remained partially submerged near Gramvousa’s coast since then.
