The southern part of the granite is crossed by steep veins with greisen mineralization. The older formation are rich in the minerals tourmaline, wolframite and cassiterite. The sea-facing outcrops have been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1995 and are under protection - Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Alderney island, Guernsey Bailiwick: Fort Tourgis and dirt road along Clonque bay - now in ruins, Fort Tourgis was an extensive fortress northwest of Saint Anne. The coastal fort , completed in 1855, was planned to accommodate a garrison of 346 men and was originally the largest of the Victorian-era forts on Alderney. It was also planned to mount 33 heavy cannons in five batteries along with four 13” mortars. The Victorian forts on Alderney were intended to defend the island and its harbor, which was intended to accommodate a British fleet that would counterbalance the naval power of France in the English Channel.
