Villa de Leyva, Colombia - August 10, 2009: The church on the main plaza, of the historic 16th Century town of Villa de Leyva, in Andean, Colombian Department of Boyacá. Founded in 1572, and located at just over 7,000 feet above mean sea level on the Andes Mountains, Villa de Leyva was declared a National Monument in 1954 to protect its colonial architecture and heritage. The square on which the Church stands is the largest town square in Colombia. Seen in the image are local residents of the town and some Colombian tourists visiting the town; the International Villa de Leyva Kite Festival has just come to a close. The Saint Ecce Homo Monastery, located near Villa de Leyva, was founded in 1620. It was built as a retirement place for the oldest members of the Dominican Order. In 1816, after Colombia independency wars, rebel troops took the convent and the friars were expulsed. Weeks later, the place is taken for the royal troops and five years later the government took possession of the convent, in order to transform it into a School. After that, the place was bought by particulars and finally, in 1868,

People visiting the town and local residents are seen on the square just sitting and relaxing, chatting with friends or going about their routine chores. In the far background are the Andes Mountains. The Town was one of the locations for the movie Cobra Verde by Werner Herzog and the Spanish language Soap Opera Zorro. What looks like a well in the foreground, is actually a tank that stores rain water for use. The buildings are a good example of classic colonial Spanish architecture. The convent of Santo Ecce Homo in Colombia is a 17th century Dominican convent located in the municipality of Sutamarchan in the department of Boyaca, 8 kilometers from Villa de Leyva.
The whitewashed traditional buildings, red tiled rooftops and the white spire of a church, in the town of Villa de Leyva, a historic colonial town (which was declared a national monument in 1954).  It's pleasant climate, white washed buildings and cobblestone roads attract many visitors and tourists.
