Lomen Stave Church in winter after snowfall. It is located in the small village of Lomen in Vestre Slidre municipality in Oppland county in Norway. The church was built in the second half of the 12th century and finished ca. 1192. Every few years the church was, and still is, tarred (painted with a coat of black tar) to protect the wood against the challenging weather/climate conditions including rain, snow, wind and high humidity.

Black and white photograph of Fantoft medieval wooden tarred stave church in the City of Bergen on the west cost of Norway on a sunny day in autumn. The image shows details of the roof. The church was originally built around the year 1150 at Fortun in Sogn (in the Sognefjord). Threatened with demolition as a new church had been built to replace the old, the stave church was bought by consul Fredrik Georg Gade and saved by moving it in pieces to Fantoft in 1883. On 6 June 1992, the church was destroyed by arson. Reconstruction of the church began soon after the fire and was completed in 1997. The image was captured on old-fashioned 35mm black and white grainy ISO 400 film by an analogue (or analog) late 1980s 35 mm film camera and a fast lens with a red filter attached to darken the sky. The granularity in the image is real film grain (due to the presence of small particles of a metallic silver on the negative). Minimal post processing has been done (only adjustment of histogram). The image is part of a series of black and white film images of Fantoft Stave Church.
