The rock squirrel, Otospermophilus variegatus, is a species of rodent in the family Sciuridae and is native to Mexico and the Southwestern United States, including southern Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, West Texas, and the panhandle of Oklahoma. Sonoran Desert, Arizona.

The Uinta Chipmunk (Neotamias umbrinus) is easily recognized by its reddish-brown fur and distinctive stripes running down its back. These stripes consist of light and dark bands, helping to camouflage the chipmunk in its Southwestern USA habitat. This species is commonly found in the Rocky Mountain Range as well as parts of the desert Southwest. In the mountains, it prefers areas with dense coniferous forests, thick brush and rocky outcroppings. The Uinta chipmunk’s diet consists mainly of seeds, berries, nuts, and insects. It plays a key role in seed dispersal, particularly for coniferous trees like pines. This Uinta Chipmunk was photographed by the Queen's Garden Trail in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, USA.

The Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel (Callospermophilus lateralis) is a commonly observed rodent in Yellowstone although it's often mistaken for a large chipmunk. Unlike chipmunks, it lacks facial stripes.
