During the annual Mexican celebration, Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos or Día de Muertos) in San Diego’s Old Town is the hub of activity where family and friends celebrate the holiday. Day of the Dead is essential to Mexican history and culture, a time to honor and remember those no longer living. Throughout Old Town in San Diego, there are tributes to the departed in the form of altars (ofrendas), mariachi music, Folklorico dancers, live entertainment, theme face painting, art demonstrations, a candlelit procession through Old Town to the nearby historic El Campo Santo Cemetery, and of course, the larger than life Las Catrinas seen throughout Old Town.
