Rome, Italy, June 30 -- A suggestive view of Ponte Sant'Angelo on a summer evening. Built under the emperor Hadrian in 134 AD, this ancient bridge served to connect the heart of Rome with the emperor's mausoleum, currently Castel Sant'Angelo (in the background). In 1669, under the pontificate of Pope Clement IX, the bridge was embellished by the balustrade by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini, on which ten statues of the Angels of the Passion of Christ were placed, made by the pupils of Bernini himself. Castel Sant'Angelo, built around 123 AD as a sepulcher for Emperor Hadrian and his family, was used as a fortress, prison and refuge by the Popes due his proximity with the Vatican. It is currently owned by the Italian State and is used for visits and cultural events. Image in High Definition format.
