An young Pinyon Jay (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus) at a feeding station in central Oregon. The Pinyon Jay is an odd, crow-like jay that travels about in nomadic flocks of up to 250 birds in response to the availability of its primary food, the seeds of various pinyon pines. They also consume berries and other seeds. The Pinyon Jay has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because of extensive conversion of pinyon-juniper habitat to grazing land.

The Blackcap is a medium-sized, common and easily recognizable warbler.

The Red Crossbill is a small member of the finch family (Fringillidae) named for the bill in which one mandible crosses the other. This is an adaptation to open pine and fir cones to extract seeds, the birds’ primary food. The taxonomy of this species is very complex, with at least nine different forms in North America, with varying sized bills and different calls, that are thought to feed on specific species of pine trees. Some authors have argued for considering these as separate species.
