Nottingham, United Kingdom - January 11, 2012: The gatehouse of Nottingham castle with the famous bronze statue of Robin Hood in the foreground. Nottingham castle sits on an outcrop of rock called 'Castle Rock'. The origins of the castle date back to William the Conqueror in 1067, when a wooden castle was built. through the middle ages it was fortified and modified. It acted as a royal fortress and a royal residence. In 1649 it was demolished but rebuilt by Charles II. A royal mansion was built at the top of the castle's high ground, but this was later burned down by rioters in 1831. the castle is now a museum and a famous landmark of Nottingham. The famous Robin Hood statue was given to the city by Philip E F Clay and unveiled in 1952. Robin Hood was a popular Nottingham folk person in the medieval period, who was known for robbing the rich and giving to the poor. Many contemporary films have been made about him.

The library features ornate stonework, patterned brick quoins and mullions, elaborately tracery windows, an ornate stone entrance, and pinnacles topping the corners. Built from stone with a stone facade, the library was designed by Bodley to emulate the aesthetic of medieval English Gothic architecture through the use of elements like lancet windows, pointed arches and clustered columns. The interiors also reflect the neo-Gothic style of the era, with vaulted ceilings and wooden shelves and desks. Over 150 years since its construction, the library remains an iconic example of collegiate Gothic Revival architecture in Cambridge.
