The South Gate of Angkor Thom, built in the late 12th century (c. 1181–1218) during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, is an example of Khmer religious symbolism. The stone causeway leading to the gate is lined with 54 devas (gods) on one side and 54 asuras (demons) on the other, all gripping a naga (mythical serpent), representing the Hindu myth of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk, where gods and demons sought immortality.

The demons on the South Gate of Angkor Wat represent asuras, mythic beings from Hindu cosmology, shown gripping the body of the serpent naga Vasuki. They form one side of the famous Churning of the Ocean of Milk scene, symbolising the eternal struggle between order and chaos. Carved from sandstone in the early 12th century under King Suryavarman II, these fierce figures guard the causeway into the Angkor temple complex, their grim expressions and muscular forms intended to protect the sacred city and display divine power.

Elephant carvings at Ta Prohm Temple reflect their central role in Angkor-era Khmer society, where they symbolised royal power, strength, and divine authority. Elephants were used in warfare, construction, ceremonial processions, and temple building, and were closely associated with kings and Hindu-Buddhist cosmology, including the rain-bringing elephant Airavata of the god Indra.
