The demons on the South Gate of Angkor Wat represent asuras, mythic beings from Hindu cosmology, shown gripping the body of the serpent naga Vasuki. They form one side of the famous Churning of the Ocean of Milk scene, symbolising the eternal struggle between order and chaos. Carved from sandstone in the early 12th century under King Suryavarman II, these fierce figures guard the causeway into the Angkor temple complex, their grim expressions and muscular forms intended to protect the sacred city and display divine power.

$The Bayon was the last state temple built at Angkor in the C13. Archaeologists believe the faces represent the king of the time, Jayavarman VII although this isn\\'t certain.$
