The dragon-like figurines at either end of London Bridge are City of London boundary dragons. These iconic statues mark the boundaries of the City of London, the historic financial district. The dragons, made of cast iron, are painted silver with red details, including red crosses on their shields, which represent the Cross of St. George—the emblem of England. They symbolize the guardianship and strength of the City. Originally designed by Charles Bell Birch in 1849, the first pair stood on the Coal Exchange building. After its demolition in 1962, replicas were installed at several entry points to the City, including London Bridge, acting as gatekeepers to this ancient part of London.
