Thimphu; Bhutan: Yellow Jambhala figure on the eastern façade of Tashichho Dzong / Thimphu Dzong - a 13th-century fortress-monastery complex hosting Bhutan's government. Jambhala (aka Dzambhala, Dzambala, Zambala or Jambala) is the God of Fortune and Wealth and a member of the Jewel Family (Ratnasambhava). A thongdrel , also called thongdroel or throngdrel, is a large tapestry unveiled during tsechus in Bhutan. (A Tsechu is a religious festival.) The thongdrel is like a huge Thangka painting, building high. It depicts a seated Guru Rinpoche surrounded by holy beings. Only once per year the Thongdrel is displayed as the highlight of the tsechu festival of a district or dzongkhag. The painting is not allowed to be struck by the direct rays of the sun, thus it is unfurled at around 3:00 in the morning and rolled back up by 7:00 or 8:00 am. Notice: This painting is in the public domain. Bhutanese art is anonymous, religious and as a result it has no aesthetic function by itself. A Bhutanese does not view a painting or a statue as a work of art but as a religious work. Paintings are not signed, paintings have no copyright. This is all well explained in Françoise Pommaret’s “Bhutan, Himalayan Mountain Kingdom” edited by Odyssey Books & guides.
