Bodie is a ghost town in the Bodie Hills east of the Sierra Nevada, it became a boom town in 1876 (146 years ago) after the discovery of a profitable line of gold; by 1879 it had a population of 7,000–10,000.

One of the world's most amazing ghost towns– Bodie, California was founded in 1876 and boasts over 100 abandoned buildings in various states of disrepair. Items left behind give a spooky feel, as if inhabitants just up and vanished. The last person left the town in 1942 when the United States government shut down extraneous mining during WWII.

Today, fewer than 200 buildings remain, yet Bodie is still one of the largest ghost towns in the United States. It is designated as a California State Historic Park and a National Historic Landmark, attracting approximately 200,000 visitors annually.
