Field characters: Tot 45-49mm, Ab 31-42mm, HW 24-36mm.The largest and darkest Calopteryx, with almost entirely metallic cobalt wings in males and transparently greenish to deep ebony wings in females. The flight is butterfly-like, but heavier than in C. splendens, and the species is more often seen in deep forest shade.Occurrence:Locally common, east to the Urals. Absent from large areas in the south, e.g. many major islands, and in Anatolia mainly limited to coastal areas; rare on the plateau.Habitat: Prefers cooler running waters than other Calopteryx, typically small, more shaded or at higher latitudes: small forest streams are the classic habitat. Where streams broaden or open up, C. virgo gives way to C. splendens.Flight Season: May to late September.

The blue dragonfly or green damselfly (Calopteryx splendens) is a species of zygopteran odonate in the Calopterygidae family. They prefer sunny waters with reeds and rushes growing on their banks, in wide, slow-moving rivers and streams. These dragonflies can be seen from mid-spring to early summer, and an individual does not live longer than two weeks. Shortly after emerging from their nymph stage, dragonflies begin mating and laying eggs; the female lays around three hundred eggs on the stems and leaves of aquatic plants, and the nymphs overwinter in the water twice before developing into adults.
