It has habits and behaviors similar to those of the white-backed stilt (Himantopus melanurus), from which it differs in its black back.\nAccording to Hayman et al. (1986), is a species that presents sexual dimorphism. The adult male has a uniform black mantle and wings. The adult female has a brownish mantle and back, contrasting with the black of her neck.$
