Mayan Ruins at Caracol in Belize. Founded in 1200 BC, Caracol was one of the most important Mayan political centres between 200 AD and 900 AD, covering an area of 200 square kilometres and being home to more than 100,000 people (significantly more than modern day Belize City). The ruins were discovered in 1937.
