An American black bear (ursus americanus) casually sits in a dumpster with his arm resting on the edge while looking for food. With winter approaching, he needs to put on weight quickly so he can hibernate.

Black bear standing to check out a bird feeder in Washington, Connecticut, in rural Litchfield County, mid-April. There are an estimated 1,500 bears in the state. They have been sighted in every Connecticut town and city. Though the fourth-ranked state in population density, Connecticut is the 14th most forested, providing good bear habitat. The state recently enacted a law against feeding bears and urges people to take down their bird feeders by mid-March, when bears awaken from their winter sleep.

Bear encounter in the woods of Litchfield County in Connecticut, where most of the state's 1,500 bears are found. Bears can move as quietly as cats, and in lush woods they're hard to see. You could turn around and see one standing there. This one started huffing and puffing, but went away when the photographer raised his voice. Speaking aggressively to a bear, however, can backfire. This photographer watches out for smaller, younger bears in particular, since they may not have yet learned to avoid people.

The Brown Bear is a large mammal found in various parts of the world, including Eurasia, North America, and some parts of Asia. It is also known as the Grizzly Bear in North America. Brown Bears are typically large-bodied animals, with males weighing up to 600-700 kg and females weighing up to 200-300 kg. They have shaggy fur that can range in color from light brown to almost black, and they often have a distinctive hump on their shoulders. \n\nBrown Bears are omnivorous animals, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Their diet varies depending on their location, but it typically includes berries, nuts, roots, insects, and small mammals such as rodents. In some areas, they also prey on larger animals such as elk or moose.\n\nBrown Bears are known for their strength and powerful muscles, which allow them to dig and forage for food, climb trees, and swim long distances. They are also known to be solitary animals, except during mating season. Brown Bears hibernate during the winter months, often in a den made of vegetation, where they can conserve energy and survive on stored fat until the spring.\n\nDue to habitat loss and hunting, Brown Bears are considered a threatened species in some parts of their range. However, conservation efforts have helped to stabilize their populations in many areas.l look
Black bear in spring woods of Washington, Connecticut; monochrome with slight yellow toning. This bear’s lowered head and menacing look -- with the high-contrast lighting, lush May woods, and balanced composition -- work best in black and white.\n\nMost of Connecticut’s 1,200 bears are in rural Litchfield County, where this photo was taken. The county is somewhat larger than Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is famous for its black bears, among other things. That park has an estimated two bears per square mile. The bear density in Litchfield County is comparable.\n\nNotes from the photographer:\n\n\
