Horta, Faial Island, Azores, Portugal: Horta is situated on the southeastern shore of Faial Island within a sheltered bay that has historically facilitated its role as a transatlantic waypoint, with a population of 15.000 residents, of which approximately 7,000 reside in the urban parishes of Angústias, Conceição, and Matriz. Settlement commenced around 1467 under Flemish nobleman Josse van Huerter, who established a chapel and community that evolved into a town by 1498 under King Manuel I, bolstered by Portuguese and Flemish immigrants focused on agriculture, including woad dyes, oranges, and wines from neighboring Pico Island; by the 19th century, Horta's port supported whaling fleets, submarine telegraph cables from 1893, and aviation milestones such as the first transatlantic seaplane landing in 1919, cementing its cosmopolitan identity. Architecturally, the city features volcanic basalt constructions such as the 16th-century Fort of Santa Cruz, the Baroque Igreja Matriz do São Salvador with its Joanino altarpieces and azulejo tiles, and the 17th-century Igreja do Carmo, alongside the iconic Marina of Horta. Today, Horta's economy centers on tourism, including whale-watching and cultural festivals, alongside agriculture, fisheries, and port activities.
