L 37-42cm, WS 63-74cm.\nBreeds on extensive wet meadows, grassy marshes, boggy moorland. \nOn passage and in winter, frequents mainly estuaries, saltings, coastal mudflats and lagoons; also inland marshes.\n \nThis beautiful wader is a quite common breeding Bird in the Netherlands in the described Habitats. \n\nThe Picture is made in the Polder Arkemheen (the Netherlands) in Spring 2022.
The pied avocet is a large black and white wader in the avocet and stilt family, Recurvirostridae. They breed in temperate Europe and across the Palearctic to Central Asia then on to the Russian Far East.
A resident and widespread species, Black-winged Stilts can be found both on the coast and inland on any wadeable pond, lake, marsh or stream.

Measures 38 centimeters long. Adults have long pink legs, a long black beak and an extensive white stripe that extends across the lower abdomen, neck and part of the head, which has a black upper part, as well as the nape and back. The legs alone measure around 16 cm and, when the bird flies, they are arranged longitudinally in relation to the body. It has habits and behaviors similar to those of the white-backed stilt (Himantopus melanurus), from which it differs in its black back.According to Hayman et al. (1986), is a species that presents sexual dimorphism. The adult male has a uniform black mantle and wings. The adult female has a brownish mantle and back, contrasting with the black of her neck.
