Assisi is famous for being the city of San Francesco and Santa Chiara (St Francis and St Clare), recognized in the world as a place of spirituality and peace between all peoples and different confessions. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. The cloister of the Sacro Convento (Franciscan friary) adjacent to the Basilica di San Francesco (Basilica of Saint Francis), in the medieval heart of Assisi, in Umbria, central Italy. In the center of the courtyard there is an ancient well for drinking water. Built in the Italian Gothic style from 1228 onwards and completed in 1253, the Basilica has housed the mortal remains of the Saint of the Poor since 1230, located in a crypt beneath the high altar. Built at the same time as the Basilica, the Franciscan convent is connected to the church by three buildings. The church was designed by Maestro Jacopo Tedesco and is composed of the Basilica Inferiore (Lower Basilica) and the Basilica Superiore (Upper Basilica), perfectly integrated. Famous for being the birthplace of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, Assisi and the spirituality of its sacred places have become over the centuries a symbol of peace, a point of reference for tolerance and solidarity among peoples and among the world's different faiths. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life.
