Lichen Coral Porites lichen occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific. The appearance of Porites lichen is very diverse, so the surface structure, the corallites, are more important for identification. Colonies are flat laminae or plates, or fused nodules and columns. The diameter of the corallites is 1.5mm; they are commonly aligned in irregular rows separated by slight ridges. Septal structures are variable and irregular. Porites lichen is common and usually conspicuous. Porites corals can withstand even very harsh conditions more than other genera. The average of coral growth rates ranged from 0.8-1.2 cm/year. For example, Actopora species are often finely branched, grow very quickly, but are practically defenseless against surf and other forces. The compact growth form of Porites species allows them to survive even in very demanding environments, as long as temperatures do not fluctuate too much.The light-colored areas are feeding marks from parrotfish.
