The rosybill is a pochard duck with a rosy red beak and black / gray plumage, originally from Chile and now widespread. The Latin name of the rosybill duck, (Netta peposaca), is explained like this: Netta is Greek for 'duck', pepo is Latin for 'melon' and sakos is Greek for 'shield'. The rosybill is the duck with the melon-shield. This refers to the swelling at the base of the bill on the male. (There is a saying that nothing good will come of something named with a mixture of Greek and Latin - for example 'television'. The rosybill 'proves' the rule.) Second photo of a rosybill duck: .
