It breeds on the North American arctic tundra and winters in the southern United States and south through northern South America. This bird in winter plumage is on the Salton Sea in Imperial County, southern California.

The spotted curlew is a medium-sized bird, measuring 10 to 18 cm in length and with a wingspan of 37 to 40 cm. The female is 20 to 25% larger than the male, weighing 43 to 50 g, compared to 34 to 41 g for the male.The spotted curlew has coloration ranging from brown to olive-green gray on its crown, nape, back, and wings, and white on its face, neck, chest, and belly. Its common name derives from the black spots on its white chest and abdomen, especially when in breeding plumage. Outside the breeding season, the belly and chest are white.
