This specimen was photographed during a night dive while standing motionless. It would have been more difficult during the day. The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific from Africa to Japan and Australia (but not in the Red Sea or the Arabian Gulf) widely around coral reefs to a maximum depth of 60 m. Pterocaesio tile grows up to a max. length of 30 cm, the common length is 20 cm. Juveniles occasionally appear in large numbers in shallow lagoons and on reef flats.
