Essaouira / Mogador, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco: this sandstone fortification, known as the Skala du Port, is a primary defense structure at the harbor of Essaouira, Morocco. Constructed in the 18th century during the reign of Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, the site demonstrates a significant European architectural presence in North Africa; it was designed by French engineer Théodore Cornut. The architecture follows the Vauban style, visible in the crenelated ramparts and the circular stone watchtower, or echauguette, positioned on the corner of the bastion. The structure features arched openings at the base to allow for tide movement and a platform equipped with bronze cannons aimed toward the Atlantic Ocean. Essaouira, formerly Mogador, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and this bastion serves as a testament to the city’s history as a fortified maritime trading hub between Africa and Europe.
