March 3rd, 2013, Cape Coast, Ghana. Cape Coast Castle was used to hold slaves before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas, especially the Caribbean. This “gate of no return” was the last stop before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. This picture shows the outside fortified walls of the castle, nowadays ornate by African art.

Elmina, Ghana: crenulated ramparts of São Jorge da Mina Castle, also known as Mina or Feitoria da Mina, built by Portugal in 1482. First established as a trade settlement, the castle later became one of the most important stops on the route of the Atlantic slave trade. The Dutch West India Company seized the fort from the Portuguese in 1637, and took over all of the Portuguese Gold Coast in 1642. The slave trade operated under the Dutch until 1814. In 1872, the Dutch Gold Coast, including the fort, became a British possession - colonial architecture - UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The fort was built in 1482 by the Portuguese on the Gold Coast, today's Ghana. Elmina Castle later became a major center of the transatlantic slave trade. It is thought to be the oldest surviving European building in Africa south of Sahara.
The Church of St. Francis of Assisi was built in 1661 by the Portuguese in the Portuguese Viceroyalty of India. The Church of St. Francis of Assisi, together with a convent, was established by eight Portuguese Franciscan friars who landed in Goa in 1517.

Cape Coast, Ghana: Cape Coast castle - cannons along the parapet - fortress used by several European nations to buy slaves from their African partners - colonial architecture - Originally a Portuguese factory outpost (a 'feitoria') established in 1555, the current building dates from 1637, a Dutch base, later conquered by Sweden under Henrik Carloff in 1652 and named Fort Carolusburg. Carloff operated the fortress as a trading post with the help of the Svenska Söderkompaniet. In 1660-1663 the local 'fetu' ruler conquered and occupied the castle. In 1659 it became Danish, in 1663 Swedish and in 1665 British (through Robert Holmes ). Now a museum. Triangular trade / Atlantic slave trade. UNESCO World Heritage site.
