Paestum is one of the most important archeological sites of Italy, located south of Naples. This picture shows one of the three well preserved Greek temples in Doric style, the Temple of Poseidon, also called the Temple of Neptune. It is a massive, yet very simple  temple, built of local limestone.With six columns on the front and fourteen columns along the sides.

Paestum was a Greek town, built on the Tyrrhenian Sea about 450 BC.  It is famous for its three Doric temples which are in a remarkable state of preservation. The town boasts paved roads, an amphitheater, and walls of many structures.  Paestum was abandoned by the Romans in the middle ages due to the spread of disease.
