The church was built in the years 1903–1906, when the Caroli church in Borås had become too cramped. The church building is in neo-gothic style. The building was renovated in the early 1950s and in 2006 underwent another extensive renovation, both externally and internally. Since 1939, the Church of Sweden has had two parishes in Borås, Caroli parish and Gustav Adolfs parish.
