The country road that climbs towards the ruins is the route of the ancient Tratturo Magno, the longest of the Royal drovers' tracks which began in L'Aquila (Abruzzo) and ended in Foggia (Puglia) on which transhumance took place for centuries. The ruins are the walls and towers of the ancient town of Peltuinum (1st century BC), an archaeological site that can be visited freely.

The Chaîne des Puys consists of more than 80 volcanoes, running from north to south over a distance of 45 kilometres and a width of 3 to 5 kilometres. They erupted between 95,000 and 8,000 years ago, which is short in geological terms. The Puy-de-Dôme is the highest point at 1465 metres. On 2 July 2018, the Chaîne des Puys/faille de Limagne was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, as a geological-tectonic area of universal importance.
