Vinca major, also called bigleaf periwinkle, large periwinkle and blue periwinkle, is a species of flowering plant in the family Apocynaceae. It is an evergreen perennial, frequently used in cultivation as groundcover.

Low to short, practically hairless, sub shrub with trailing stems, often rooting at some of the nodes. Leaves leathery, lanceolate. Flowers blue-purple, occasionally white, 25-30mm, solitary; calyx lobes, not hairy on margins. Fruit forked, up to 25mm, but rarely formed in NW Europe.\nThis evergreen Shrub grows in Woodland Margins, Coppices, Banks, Hedgerows and Rocky Ground, to 1320m. \nFlowering Season: February-May.\nDistribution: Lesser Periwinkle is Indigenous in Europe, but doubtful native in much of NW Europe. It is from origin indigenous in the Mediterranean. \n\nThe Plant is much to be seen in Gardens and Parks in the Netherlands. \n\nVinca species produce poisonous white Latex, when cut. The species is known as herbal medicine.
