Plentiful white flowers of Viburnum opulus roseum in mid May
Guelder rose (Viburnum opulus) is also known known as dogberry and water elder. Certainly, this bush of some 3 or 4 metres in height was growing beside a stream. The name guelder comes from the Dutch province Guelderland. Guelder rose belongs to the same flower family as honeysuckle, and is a typical British woodland shrub. The white flowers form in clusters, with large infertile flowers on the outside and creamy, fertile ones in the inner. In autumn, the central flowers develop into drooping clusters of juicy red berries, each with a single seed. Although the berries look very similar to redcurrants, and attract wildlife, they are poisonous to humans unless they are cooked first.
