From Superga (Turin), overlook on Turin and the Alps with snow. Superga is a hill (672 m - 2,204 ft) situated on the south bank of the Po River. It is part of the range of hills (result of an ancient orogeny) overlooking Turin eastward. The Basilica was designed by the archiect Filippo Juvarra and built from 1717 to 1731. The church fulfilled a vow made from Victor Amadeus II, Duke of Savoy (then King of Piedmont-Sardinia), during the siege of Turin (1706). The Duke and his cousin, Prince Eugene of Savoy, general of Imperial army, promised to build a big basilica dedicated to the Virgin, if they could liberate Turin from the siege of the French army. Today the crypt of the Basilica contains the tombs of many princes and kings of the House of Savoy. A rack railway connects Superga to Turin (district of Sassi). In 1949, an airplane carrying the entire Torino football team (popularly known as Grande Torino) crashed into the retaining wall at the back of the Basilica. There were 31 victims, nobody survived.
